good turn out of 500s joined the 750 Trophy Regulars for some exiting action at Donington.
The similar performance of the 750 Trophy cars helped produce close racing throughout the
field with various battles. David Lecoq took pole and seemed set for a win, he was
chased for many laps by Don Rawson but always looked to be in control until lap
7 when something let go, leaving Don to take the overall win. This also left John
Turner in the 500 lead which he held for the duration proving just how fast a JAP can go
with the right level of commitment! James Culver took second (4th Overall) and Roy Hunt
enjoyed a race long battle with Roger Windley, the Genie having more grip
thanks to modern tyres but Roy held third (5th Overall) to the end in spite of some
determined attempts to relieve him of the burden!
The most exciting battle of the the race was between Kerry Horan, Simon Frost and
Martin Gartside. Kerry made the best start from 15th on the grid to lead Simon by a
few car lenghts at the end of lap one with Martin further back. Within a few laps, Simon
was right on Kerry's tail and pulled off a committed move through Redgate. The following
lap he nearly lost all with a grassy moment at the same corner! The scrap continued for
lap after lap allowing Martin to close the gap with Kerry finally regaining his place and,
on the final chicane, Martin took Simon for 6th (8th Overall) At the flag, less than a
second covered all three of them.
