Born in
June 1923 in Edinburgh, Ron was best known for two victories at Le Mans in 1956, with
Ninian Sanderson, and 1957 with Ivor Bueb both in D Type
Jaguars.
He was third in the 1956 Italian Grand Prix driving a Connaught which
brought him to the attention of BRM for whom he drove for three intermittent and largely
unproductive seasons until the end of 1959. He drove a works Lotus 18 to sixth place in
the 1960 French Grand Prix and had his last Formula 1 outing in a works Cooper in the US
Grand Prix at Riverside later that same year. He was killed when his converted Mustang
fighter crashed in Australia in April 1962. |
